PLAY SYNOPSIS & CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES:
This smash Off-Broadway hit takes you to the 1958 Springfield High School prom, where we meet Betty Jean, Cindy Lou, Missy, and Suzy: four girls with hopes and dreams as big as their crinoline skirts! As we learn about their lives and loves, the girls serenade us with classic ‘50s hits. In Act II, the Wonderettes reunite to take the stage and perform at their ten-year reunion. We learn about the highs and lows the girls have experienced in the past decade and are charmed to find that no matter what life throws their way, they will conquer it together.
CHARACTERS:
Cindy Lou (18) knows she is the prettiest girl at Springfield High. She knows she will be named Prom Queen and acts out against her best friend Betty Jean when things don’t go her way. Learns the lessons of true love and loss. Vocal Range: Mezzo-Soprano Belt: E3–F5. Sings melody line on most songs, so the other girls hang their vocals on this voice.
Missy (18) is the over-achiever of the group. Very controlled, very concerned that everything at the prom turns out wonderful and perfect. Head of the Prom Decorations Committee, and absolutely smitten with her music teacher. Her best friend is Suzy. Vocal Range: Soprano: G3–A5. Wide range, floating high vocals and belting throughout the show.
Betty Jean (18) is the class clown and tomboy, always vying for attention with Cindy Lou, her best frenemy. Cindy Lou steals Betty Jean’s boyfriend away. Can hold a grudge. Vocal Range: Alto with strong low range: D3–E5.
Suzy (18) is the gum-chewing, happy-go-lucky, go-along girl. Super-best friends with Missy, Suzy is always a little giddy and a little silly, and finds great pleasure in everything she does. In love with the lighting operator. Vocal Range: Mezzo-Alto with both sweet and soulful voice: G3–E5.
BOEING BOEING
This 1960s French farce adapted for the English-speaking stage features self-styled Parisian lothario Bernard, who has Italian, German and American fiancées, each a beautiful airline hostess with frequent “layovers.” He keeps “one up, one down, and one pending” – until unexpected schedule changes bring all three to Paris, and Bernard’s apartment, at the same time.
Bernard (30s - 40s): An American bachelor who resides in Paris, working as an architect. Bernard has the air of a "ladies man" who believes he has the female sex all figured out. He is charming and attractive, but a seductive scoundrel. He is engaged to all three air hostesses, and uses flight timetables to keep "one up, one down, and one pending," ensuring the women are never in his apartment at the same time. He is proud of his deception, until it starts to unravel (along with his confidence). (American accent required*)
Robert (30s - 40s): An old friend of Bernard's who travels to Paris from Wisconsin. A shy, sweet, small-town boy, Robert initially disapproves of Bernard's situation-though he can admit it has its advantages. He admires Bernard's ability to keep things balanced. Soon, however, Robert is caught up in the game himself, trying to keep Bernard's plan intact and stop his own anxiety from spinning out of control. (American accent required*)
Berthe (age non-specific): Bernard's housekeeper. Berthe is an obedient and meticulous maid, which makes her integral to Bernard's charade, but she isn't shy about voicing her growing dissatisfaction with Bernard's revolving-door lifestyle. Wonderfully sarcastic and blunt; also exhausted and exasperated. (French accent required*)
Gloria (20s - 30s): Bernard's American fiancée with a strong appetite for love, success, and unique food. She is an air hostess for TWA. Playfully cunning, confident, strong-willed, and not afraid to speak her mind. Politically progressive for the 60s, and is often offended when people do not share her opinion. (American accent required.*)
Gabriella (20s - 30s): Bernard's Italian fiancée. She is an air hostess for Alitalia. Feisty and seductive, she is incredibly smart and much more independent than she initially appears. (Italian accent required.*)
Gretchen (20s - 30s): Bernard's German fiancée. She is an air hostess for Lusthansa. Dominating but loving, she is full of intense passion that can switch between soft and sweet to loud and destructive in a moment. She is both intimidating and yet loveable. (German accent required.*)
*Accents do not need to be perfect but dialogue needs to be clear and understood by the audience
